When you bring your bottles of wine home you should leave them standing upright for about a week. After that they should be laid on their side in a cool, dark place with as consistent a temperature as possible and void of any vibrations, like a furnace can cause.
When you've finished enjoying a bottle you should rinse it out immediately to avoid future bacterial deposits and placed upside down in the sink to drain. The labels peel off easily, some may need a quick soak. Then put the empty bottle back in a box upside-down, this ensures there is no moisture left in the bottle to form mould and nothing can get in the bottle. I'm afraid to tell you what things can crawl inside your bottles.
